What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?
The 20-yard holds about 7 to 10 pickup loads behind 4-ft walls that are easy to load over. It's our most-used size for kitchens, whole-house declutters and single-layer roofs up to about 28 squares. Its 3 tons covers most mixed household loads.
- A kitchen remodel: cabinets, counters, drywall and flooring (typical)
- A single-layer roof up to about 28 squares
- A whole-house declutter before a move
- Flooring tear-out across 1,500–2,000 sq ft (typical)
Pickup loads assume an 8-ft bed loaded level. Examples are typical, not guaranteed.
Will my load go over 3 tons?
A kitchen remodel load of mixed debris weighs about 417 lb per cubic yard, by EPA's figure for mixed construction and demolition debris. A level 20-yard of it weighs about 8,340 lb. That's 2,340 lb over the 3-ton limit, which costs $87.75.
Concrete, dirt, brick and sand can't go in a 20-yard. Even half full, the weight would exceed legal road limits. Book a 10 or 15-yard for heavy debris.

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit on my driveway?
A 20-yard needs a 22 × 8 ft spot. On a standard two-car driveway it usually leaves one side open for a car, so tell us which side to keep clear. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance from wires and limbs.

Is the 20-yard too small or too big?
Most homeowners land on the 20-yard. It holds about twice a 10-yard, with the same 22-ft length as the 30 and 40-yard. Step down to a 15-yard for a single garage. Step up to a 30-yard for a whole-house gut or an addition.
What can't go in the 20-yard?
Kitchen remodels bring the 20-yard's most common surprises: granite and tile add weight fast, and old appliances need care. A fridge or freezer goes in for $50. Paint, solvents and batteries can't go in. Everything else from the remodel is fine, kept level with the rim.
- No chemicals
- No wet paint
- No batteries
- Mattress $50
- Tire $50
- Freon appliance $50
20-yard dumpster questions
How many squares of shingles fit in a 20-yard dumpster?
A 20-yard fits about 28 squares of single-layer architectural shingles before reaching its 3-ton limit. That assumes about 210 lb per square. Two layers cut that to about 14 squares.
Is a 20-yard dumpster big enough for a kitchen remodel?
A 20-yard holds a typical kitchen remodel: cabinets, counters, drywall, flooring and packaging. Granite and tile add weight, so the scale ticket matters more than the volume.
How heavy can a 20-yard dumpster be?
A 20-yard includes 3 tons (6,000 lb). You can load more, but every extra ton costs $75, billed by the pound from the landfill scale ticket.
Will a 20-yard dumpster block my garage?
A 20-yard is 22 ft long and 8 ft wide. On a two-car driveway it usually leaves one side open. Tell us which side you need clear.
