What fits in a 40-yard dumpster?
The 40-yard holds about 12 to 16 pickup loads, the most of any roll-off we haul. Its 8-ft walls suit bulky, light debris like framing scrap, packaging and drywall offcuts. Its 5-ton limit fits most light construction loads.
- New-home construction scrap, packaging and drywall offcuts (typical)
- A whole-building interior demolition
- A large commercial or warehouse cleanout
- A multi-room remodel with bulky, light debris
Pickup loads assume an 8-ft bed loaded level. Examples are typical, not guaranteed.
Will my load go over 5 tons?
A level 40-yard of mixed construction debris weighs about 16,680 lb, using EPA's 417 lb per cubic yard. That is 6,680 lb over the 5-ton limit, which costs $250.50. Light, bulky loads like framing scrap and packaging often stay under.
Concrete, dirt, brick and sand can't go in a 40-yard. A full load would be far over legal road weight. Book a 10 or 15-yard for heavy debris.

Will a 40-yard dumpster fit on my driveway?
A 40-yard needs a 22 × 7.5 ft spot, the same length as a 20-yard, but its 8-ft walls make it the tallest bin we haul. Most go on job sites and commercial lots. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance.

Is the 40-yard too small or too big?
Pick the 40-yard only when volume, not weight, is the problem: new-home builds, gutting a whole building or a commercial cleanout. If your debris is heavy, two smaller hauls beat one 40-yard. For a whole-house remodel, a 30-yard is usually enough.
| Size | L × W × H | Included | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30-yard (smaller) | 22 × 8 × 6 ft | 4 tons | Too small means a second haul, billed as a new rental. |
| 40-yard (this size) | 22 × 7.5 × 8 ft | 5 tons | Major demolition, new construction and large commercial projects |
What can't go in the 40-yard?
Construction and commercial loads in a 40-yard can't include hazardous chemicals, wet paint, batteries, oil or fuel. Concrete, brick, dirt and sand aren't allowed in this size at all. Freon appliances, mattresses and tires go in for $50 each.
- No chemicals
- No wet paint
- No batteries
- Mattress $50
- Tire $50
- Freon appliance $50
40-yard dumpster questions
How much can a 40-yard dumpster hold?
A 40-yard holds about 12 to 16 pickup loads and includes 5 tons (10,000 lb). Extra weight is $75 per ton, billed by the pound from the landfill scale ticket.
Will a 40-yard dumpster fit on a home driveway?
A 40-yard is 22 ft long and 7.5 ft wide, the same length as a 20-yard. Most 40-yards go on job sites, but a long, straight driveway works if the truck can back in.
How do I load a dumpster with 8-ft walls?
Walk debris in through the rear door first and stack it from the front wall back. Save light, bulky pieces for the top, and keep everything level with the rim.
Is a 40-yard dumpster good for a roof?
Shingles hit the weight limit long before the 40-yard fills up. A roof usually fits a 20 or 30-yard better. See the roofing page for squares by size.
