Putting a Dumpster on Your Driveway
A dumpster needs a flat spot 12 to 22 ft long and about 8 ft wide. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and 23 ft of overhead clearance. We lay wooden boards under the rails to protect the driveway. The street usually needs a city permit.

How much space does a dumpster need?
A dumpster needs a flat, hard spot from 12 ft long (10-yard) to 22 ft long (20 and 30-yard), and about 8 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach to back in, and about 23 ft of overhead clearance from wires and branches.
| Size | Dumpster footprint | Truck approach (typical) | Overhead clearance (typical) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 12 × 8 ft | about 60 ft straight | about 23 ft |
| 15-yard | 16 × 7.5 ft | about 60 ft straight | about 23 ft |
| 20-yard | 22 × 8 ft | about 60 ft straight | about 23 ft |
| 30-yard | 22 × 8 ft | about 60 ft straight | about 23 ft |
| 40-yard | 22 × 7.5 ft | about 60 ft straight | about 23 ft |
Approach and clearance are typical figures. Send a photo of the spot when you book and we'll confirm it.
Will a dumpster damage my driveway?
Our drivers place wooden boards under the dumpster's steel rails and rollers on every driveway drop. The boards spread the load and keep the rails from scratching or cracking concrete and asphalt. Setting the dumpster gently in a level spot does the rest.
Boards protect the surface. They don't make every spot safe. Avoid these:
- Septic tank lids and drain field lines
- Sprinkler heads and shallow irrigation lines
- Soft lawn, especially after rain
- Concrete poured in the last few weeks
- Spots under low power or cable lines
Can the dumpster go in the street?
A dumpster in the street or alley sits on public right-of-way, and many cities require a permit or limit who may place it there. Rules differ city by city. Check your city's page, and keep the dumpster on your driveway when you can.

Does my HOA allow a dumpster in the driveway?
Many HOAs set rules for driveway containers, such as a limit on days or a request for approval first. Check your HOA's guidelines, or ask its management company, before delivery day. Our standard rental is 7 days, and we can time delivery so the dumpster arrives the day work starts and leaves when it ends.
What if the truck can't reach the spot?
If the truck arrives and can't drop or pick up the dumpster, a $125 dry-run fee applies. The usual causes are parked cars, low wires, overhanging limbs and locked gates. Clear the approach the night before, and the driver's text 20 to 30 minutes out is your last check.
- Move cars off the driveway and the street in front of it
- Unlock gates and tell us any gate code
- Trim low branches over the approach
- Mark sprinkler heads and septic lids
Questions about this
Can a dumpster go on grass?
Grass works only when the ground is dry and firm. Wet lawn can rut under a loaded truck and container, so a driveway or gravel pad is safer.
Which way does the dumpster door face?
Tell us which end you want the rear door on when you book. Facing the door toward the house or garage makes loading easier.
Will the dumpster block my garage?
On a two-car driveway, a dumpster usually leaves one side open. Tell us which garage door you need clear, and the driver places it on the other side.
Can I move the dumpster after delivery?
A loaded roll-off can't be moved by hand. If it needs to move, call us and we'll reposition it with the truck.
Do I need to be there for placement?
Not if the spot is clear. Mark it with cones or chalk, or send a photo, and the driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes out.
