Heavy debris · 10 & 15 yard only
Concrete, Dirt and Brick Dumpster Rental
Heavy debris goes in our two smaller dumpsters, loaded halfway so the truck stays road-legal. Keep the load to one material and it qualifies for clean-fill pricing.

What size dumpster do I need for concrete or dirt?
Concrete, dirt, brick and sand go only in a 10-yard or 15-yard dumpster, loaded no more than halfway up the walls. A half-full 10-yard gives about 5 cubic yards of space. A half-full 15-yard gives about 7.5. Larger jobs need a second haul.
| Job | Solid volume | Suggested size |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 10 ft patio, 4 in thick | 33 cu ft ≈ 1.2 cu yd solid | 10-yard |
| 10 × 20 ft patio, 4 in thick | 67 cu ft ≈ 2.5 cu yd solid | 10-yard |
| 12 × 24 ft driveway section, 4 in | 96 cu ft ≈ 3.6 cu yd solid | 15-yard |
| 20 × 20 ft slab, 4 in thick | 133 cu ft ≈ 4.9 cu yd solid | 15-yard, or two hauls |
Solid volume is length × width × thickness. Broken concrete takes up more room loose than it did as a slab (typical), so leave space. Dirt and sand fill the same way: halfway only.
Why can heavy debris only fill the dumpster halfway?
Heavy debris can fill a dumpster only halfway because a full load would exceed legal highway weight. Texas caps a loaded truck at 80,000 lb gross, including the truck and the container. The half-full line keeps your load legal and stops the driver from refusing it.
Source: Tex. Transp. Code §621.101. If heavy debris is loaded above the half line, the driver can't haul it. The excess must come out, and a $125 dry-run fee applies.
What is clean-fill pricing?
Clean-fill pricing is a separate rate for heavy loads of one material only, such as concrete only or dirt only. The load can't include trash, wood or other debris. Mixed heavy loads are billed the normal way: the included tons, then $75 per ton over.
Ask for the clean-fill rate when you call. Keep a separate bin for trash on the job so the concrete stays clean. See how dumpster weight is billed.
Where should a concrete dumpster go?
A concrete dumpster belongs on a paved driveway or firm, dry ground, never on soft lawn, a septic lid or freshly poured concrete. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Wooden boards go under the rails.
- Plan a short, flat path for the wheelbarrow, and use a sturdy board as a ramp over the side.
- Drop pieces in gently and spread them across the floor. Don't stack them in one corner.
- Keep the dumpster where the truck can pick it up straight. Heavy bins can't be dragged out of tight spots.
What can't go in a heavy-debris dumpster?
Concrete, brick, block, stone, dirt and sand can go in a 10 or 15-yard heavy-debris dumpster, loaded halfway. Wet paint, chemicals, fuel and batteries can't go in. Mixing trash or wood into concrete is allowed, but the load loses clean-fill pricing.
Not allowed in any dumpster
- Hazardous chemicals, solvents and pool chemicals
- Wet or liquid paint
- Batteries of any kind, including car batteries
- Motor oil, fuel and other liquids
Texas landfills can't accept lead-acid batteries, used oil or bulk liquids (30 TAC §330.15).
Allowed for $50 each
- Mattresses and box springs
- Car and truck tires
- Fridges, freezers, window AC units and other Freon appliances
These cost more because the landfill must process them separately.
Concrete & dirt dumpster questions
Why can't I fill a concrete dumpster to the top?
A full dumpster of concrete would be far over legal road weight. The halfway line keeps the truck within Texas weight limits.
Does broken concrete take up more room than the slab?
Broken concrete takes more room loose than it did as a solid slab, because of the gaps between pieces. Leave extra space when you estimate.
What counts as a clean load of concrete or dirt?
A clean load is one material only: concrete only, or dirt only. No trash, wood, plastic or yard waste mixed in.
Can I break up a patio myself and load it?
Homeowners often do. Break pieces small enough to lift, load them low and spread them out, and keep them below the halfway line.
Can a 20 or 30-yard dumpster take dirt?
Dirt, sand, concrete and brick go only in a 10 or 15-yard. Even half full, a 20 or 30-yard of dirt would be over road weight.
