What size dumpster does a construction job need?

Most construction jobs need a 20 or 30-yard dumpster. A 20-yard fits an interior demolition or a small remodel. A 30-yard fits a room addition, a garage build or new-home framing scrap. Concrete, block and brick go in a 10 or 15-yard, loaded halfway.

JobUsual sizeNotes
Interior demolition or small remodel20-yardDrywall and flooring are heavy for their volume.
Room addition or garage build30-yardFraming scrap, sheathing and packaging.
New-home build30-yardPlan swaps as each stage fills a dumpster (typical).
Concrete, block or brick10-yard or 15-yardLoaded only halfway. Clean loads get clean-fill pricing.
Site grading, dirt or sand10-yard or 15-yardLoaded only halfway.

Typical sizing. We confirm the size with you before dispatch.

How heavy is construction debris?

Mixed construction debris weighs about 417 lb per loose cubic yard, by EPA's factor. A level 30-yard of it weighs about 12,510 lb, which is over its 4-ton limit. Clean framing lumber is much lighter at about 169 lb per cubic yard. Drywall runs about 467 lb.

Worked example: a 30-yard filled level with drywall offcuts weighs about 14,010 lb, or 7 tons. That is 3 tons over the included 4 tons. At $75 per ton, the overage is about $225.75, shown to the pound on the scale ticket.

Keep heavy material out of the big bins. Put concrete and block in a separate 10-yard and fill the 30-yard with lighter scrap. Read how dumpster weight is billed.

Where should a construction dumpster go on the lot?

Set a construction dumpster on firm, dry, level ground close to the work. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Keep it off new concrete, septic lids and soft fill, where the truck or bin could sink or crack the surface.

  • Paved drives get wooden boards under the rails and rollers.
  • Mark the drop spot with paint or a flag, and keep pallets and trailers clear of it.
  • If the truck can't drop or pick up because of blockages, a $125 dry-run fee applies.
  • Some North Texas cities only let their franchised hauler place construction roll-offs inside city limits. Check your city page before you book.

Placement guide

What rules apply to construction and demolition debris?

Three rules matter most. OSHA requires an enclosed chute when debris drops more than 20 ft outside the exterior walls. Texas DSHS requires notice at least 10 working days before demolishing a building, even when no asbestos is found. Loads must stay level with the rim for the road.

These are summaries of the law, not legal advice. Confirm with your permit office or inspector.

How do swaps and extensions work on a long build?

A swap is billed as a new rental at the flat rate for that size. We pull the full dumpster and drop an empty one in the same trip. Extra days cost $25 each after the 7 included days. Request swaps by 3 PM for next-day service.

Same-day swaps depend on truck availability and carry a $50 rush fee. Every pickup gets its own scale ticket, so each load is weighed and billed on its own. See what a dumpster rental costs.

What can't go in a construction dumpster?

Wood, drywall, flooring, roofing, siding, cabinets, windows and packaging can all go in a construction dumpster. Solvents, liquid adhesives, wet paint, fuel and batteries can't go in. Concrete, block, brick and dirt belong only in a 10 or 15-yard, loaded halfway.

Not allowed in any dumpster

  • Hazardous chemicals, solvents and pool chemicals
  • Wet or liquid paint
  • Batteries of any kind, including car batteries
  • Motor oil, fuel and other liquids

Texas landfills can't accept lead-acid batteries, used oil or bulk liquids (30 TAC §330.15).

Allowed for $50 each

  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Car and truck tires
  • Fridges, freezers, window AC units and other Freon appliances

These cost more because the landfill must process them separately.

Construction dumpster questions

Can you set up dumpster swaps on a schedule for a long job?

Swaps can be booked ahead for set days. Each swap is billed as a new rental at the flat rate for that size. Book by 3 PM for next-day service.

Can you drop a dumpster on a dirt lot with no driveway?

We can place it on firm, dry, level ground. Mud or soft fill can trap the truck. If the driver can't place it safely, a $125 dry-run fee applies.

Can block and brick share a dumpster with framing scrap?

Mixed heavy loads are allowed only in a 10 or 15-yard, filled halfway. A mixed load doesn't get clean-fill pricing, so keep masonry separate when you can.

What happens if the crew overfills the dumpster?

Debris must stay level with the top rim. If it's overfilled, the driver can't haul it, a $125 dry-run fee applies, and the excess must come out before transport.

Will the landfill ticket show each load separately?

Each haul is weighed on its own, and each scale ticket is attached to the final invoice for that rental.
