What size dumpster do I need for a cleanout?

A two-car garage cleanout usually fits a 15-yard dumpster. One room or an attic fits a 10-yard. A whole-house declutter before a move fits a 20-yard, and an estate with four or more bedrooms usually needs a 30-yard. Household junk is bulky but light.

Will household junk go over the weight limit?

Household junk rarely goes over the weight limit. EPA lists loose mixed household trash at about 250 to 300 lb per cubic yard. A level 20-yard of it weighs about 5,000 to 6,000 lb, at or under the included 3 tons. Appliances, books and paper boxes add weight.

A refrigerator weighs about 250 lb and a washer about 150 lb, by EPA's per-unit figures. Fridges and freezers also carry a $50 fee for Freon handling. If you go over, extra weight is $75 per ton, billed by the pound. Read how dumpster weight is billed.

Do I need to be home for a cleanout dumpster delivery?

You don't need to be home if the drop spot is clear. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes before arriving to confirm the placement. Deliveries run between 7 AM and 5 PM. Leave the driveway open and any gate unlocked.

  • The dumpster goes on wooden boards to protect the driveway.
  • A blocked drive or locked gate means a $125 dry-run fee.
  • A tarp over the open dumpster keeps rain out and neighbors' trash out.

What happens to old fridges, freezers and AC units?

Fridges, freezers and window AC units can go in the dumpster for $50 each. Federal rules require the refrigerant to be recovered before final disposal, and Texas landfills can't take Freon items unless that is done. The fee covers that special handling.

Rules: 40 CFR 82.155; 30 TAC §330.15.

Where do paint and chemicals from a cleanout go?

Paint, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides and batteries can't go in our dumpsters. Take them to your city or county household hazardous waste program. Many North Texas cities offer drop-off days or curbside pickup for residents. Your city page lists the local option where we've verified it.

State guide: TCEQ household hazardous waste guide. Find your city page for the local program. Full list: what can go in a dumpster.

What else can't go in a cleanout dumpster?

Furniture, boxes, clothes, toys, carpet, yard tools and old shelving can go in a cleanout dumpster. Mattresses and tires cost $50 each. Wet paint, chemicals and batteries can't go in at all. Keep the load level with the top rim.

Not allowed in any dumpster

  • Hazardous chemicals, solvents and pool chemicals
  • Wet or liquid paint
  • Batteries of any kind, including car batteries
  • Motor oil, fuel and other liquids

Texas landfills can't accept lead-acid batteries, used oil or bulk liquids (30 TAC §330.15).

Allowed for $50 each

  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Car and truck tires
  • Fridges, freezers, window AC units and other Freon appliances

These cost more because the landfill must process them separately.

Cleanout dumpster questions

Can I put a refrigerator in a cleanout dumpster?

A refrigerator can go in for $50. The fee covers recovering its Freon, which federal rules require before disposal.

What do I do with old paint from the garage?

Liquid paint can't go in the dumpster. Take it to your local household hazardous waste program. Many cities list drop-off days or curbside pickup.

Will one dumpster hold a whole house of furniture?

A 20-yard holds most three-bedroom cleanouts and a 30-yard most larger estates. Taking furniture apart and filling gaps fits much more.

How do I keep neighbors from using my dumpster?

Keep the dumpster covered with a tarp when you're not loading. You pay for everything on the scale ticket, so it pays to watch what goes in.

Can I put a mattress in the cleanout dumpster?

Mattresses and box springs can go in for $50 each because the landfill processes them separately.
