How to Load a Dumpster

Load heavy items low and through the rear door first, break furniture down, fill gaps, and stop level with the top rim. Concrete and dirt stop halfway. An overfilled dumpster can't be hauled, and a $125 dry-run fee applies until the excess comes out.

How do you load a dumpster the right way?

Load a dumpster in 5 steps: heavy and long items through the rear door first, heavy debris flat on the floor, furniture broken down, gaps filled with small debris, and nothing above the top rim. Done this way, most dumpsters hold far more than a pile tossed over the side.

  1. Plan the doorWalk heavy or long items in through the rear door first, while it still opens.
  2. Heavy goes lowLay heavy debris flat on the floor and spread it from end to end.
  3. Break it downTake apart furniture, cut long boards and flatten boxes.
  4. Fill the gapsPack small debris into the spaces between big pieces.
  5. Stop at the rimNothing above the top edge. Cover the load before rain.

What is the fill line on a dumpster?

The fill line is the top rim of the dumpster: debris must be level with it, not above it. For concrete, dirt, brick and sand, the line is halfway up the walls of a 10 or 15-yard. An overfilled dumpster can't legally go on the road.

Texas requires loose loads to be enclosed or covered so nothing blows or spills (Transportation Code §725.021). If a load is above the rim, the driver can't haul it. A $125 dry-run fee applies, and you remove the excess before we come back.

How do I stay under the weight limit while loading?

Watch 3 materials while loading: shingles, tile and plaster. They reach a dumpster's 2 to 4 included tons long before it looks full. Spread them across the floor, keep the bin covered from rain, and fill the rest with light debris like wood or boxes.

How do I keep neighbors from using my dumpster?

Two simple steps keep a dumpster yours: cover it with a tarp when you're not loading, and place it where you can see it from the house. Debris someone else adds counts toward your weight and could include banned items that delay pickup.

Questions about this

Should I load the dumpster from the door or over the side?

Use the rear door for heavy, bulky and long items while the floor is still empty. Once the back is full, close and latch the door and load over the sides.

Can I stand inside the dumpster to pack it?

Climbing in is risky on loose debris and nails. Push debris down with a rake or shovel from outside, and wear gloves and boots.

Do I need to bag the trash?

Bags aren't required. Loose debris packs tighter, but bagging dusty or small debris keeps it from blowing out.

What if the dumpster is full before I'm done?

Stop at the rim and call us for a swap. A swap pulls the full dumpster and drops an empty one, billed as a new rental.
