Dumpster Rental for Kitchen and Bathroom Remodels
Pick the dumpster by room, then check the weight. A bathroom gut fits a 10-yard and a kitchen fits a 20-yard. Tile and drywall weigh more than they look.

What size dumpster do I need for a remodel?
A bathroom remodel usually fits a 10-yard dumpster. A kitchen remodel usually fits a 20-yard. A basement finish or a remodel of several rooms needs a 20 or 30-yard. Tile, mortar beds and plaster are heavy, so the weight limit matters more than the space.
| Remodel | Usual size | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Full bathroom gut | 10-yard | Tile and mortar beds add weight fast. |
| Kitchen remodel | 20-yard | Stone counters and tile floors are heavy. |
| Flooring tear-out, whole floor | 20-yard | Carpet is light. Tile is heavy. |
| Several rooms or a basement | 20-yard or 30-yard | Drywall adds weight quickly. |
| Kitchen plus a bathroom | 30-yard | Pick the 30-yard if both are gutted at once. |
Typical sizing based on industry-standard volumes.
How heavy is remodel debris?
Drywall weighs about 467 lb per loose cubic yard, and mixed remodel debris about 417 lb, by EPA's factors. A 15-yard filled level with drywall weighs about 7,005 lb. That is about 2,005 lb over its 2.5 tons, which costs about $75.19 at $75 per ton.
Light debris like cabinets, trim and carpet fills space before it fills the weight limit. Heavy debris like tile, mortar, plaster and stone counters fills the weight limit first.
Spread heavy pieces across the floor of the dumpster and fill the gaps with light debris. Read how dumpster weight is billed.
Weights: EPA Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors (loose cubic yards).
Where should the dumpster go during a remodel?
Put a remodel dumpster on the driveway as close to the main door as possible, so every trip through the house is short. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Our driver lays wooden boards under the rails first.
- Tell us if you need one garage door clear, and we'll set the dumpster to the other side.
- Lay a drop cloth or board path from the door to the dumpster to protect floors and grass.
- Check HOA rules. Some HOAs limit how long a dumpster may sit on a driveway.
What rules apply to remodeling older homes?
Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, and paid renovators must follow EPA's lead-safe work rule there. Older flooring, ceiling texture and pipe insulation can contain asbestos. Federal and Texas rules require asbestos inspections and 10-working-day notices for many demolition and renovation projects.
- Lead: EPA RRP rule, 40 CFR 745 Subpart E covers paid renovation work in pre-1978 housing.
- Asbestos: 40 CFR 61.145; Texas notices: Texas DSHS asbestos notifications.
Our recommendation: test suspect materials before demolition. This is a summary, not legal advice. Confirm with Texas DSHS or your inspector.
How long should I keep a remodel dumpster?
Most remodel debris comes out during demolition, so the 7 included days usually cover the tear-out. If the job runs longer, extra days cost $25 each. If the dumpster fills first, a swap is billed as a new rental at the flat rate for that size.

What can't go in a remodel dumpster?
Cabinets, counters, drywall, flooring, fixtures, doors and trim can go in a remodel dumpster. Wet paint, solvents, adhesives in liquid form and batteries can't go in. Old fridges and window AC units go in for $50 each because their Freon needs special handling.
Not allowed in any dumpster
- Hazardous chemicals, solvents and pool chemicals
- Wet or liquid paint
- Batteries of any kind, including car batteries
- Motor oil, fuel and other liquids
Texas landfills can't accept lead-acid batteries, used oil or bulk liquids (30 TAC §330.15).
Allowed for $50 each
- Mattresses and box springs
- Car and truck tires
- Fridges, freezers, window AC units and other Freon appliances
These cost more because the landfill must process them separately.
